Halloween pics! [Nov. 1st, 2011|04:18 pm]

She wouldn't keep still, these are the best we got! We just went to a few neighbor's houses, our lovely neighbor Jan next door gave her socks and an Elmo book! She was so thrilled. She didn't realise the candy was edible and was so happy when I let her swap it for an organic fruit leather and some raisins! Ha ha, kid, I love you!
I made the costume out of a man's red T-shirt and the felt circles, an old petticoat and recycled wings from last year's 'Fly' get-up!

I can't vote but I can donate... [Oct. 24th, 2011|12:26 pm]

I really liked this segment from Jon Stewart (though I pretty much always like him). It really pisses me off  in general how the (Fox) right-wing media and Republicans respond to Obama's presidency thus far. Really, if a white conservative had accomplished what Obama has done- health care (Yeah, Nixon tried and failed to push a health care bill through, back in the day, FAIL), saved the US car industry, assisted in a legal, swift, totally justifiable military NATO intervention in Libya, found and killed Osama Bin Laden, those four things alone....I mean can you imagine how different the response would be?

Domestique [Sep. 6th, 2011|08:33 am]
This is boring really and hausfrau related so feel free to skip.

I've been reading lots of books on frugality, organizing and , I guess, home economics recently. Books like 'Clean it Fast' and 'Be CentsAble' or 'Good Housekeeping with Eloise' and whilst it's outwardly lame it's actually helped me in ways I didn't envision. I wanted t get more organized around the house. Have a home for everything to make tidying up faster and simpler. I wanted to get on top of doing things regularly that I don't like to do, like cleaning the tub. I really wanted to get a handle on what we're spending each month. I just wanted this stuff to be easy an unobtrusive so that I can focus my free time on my book.

So I read all these library books to glean secrets of domestic goddesses. I feel like I'm getting there. I have a weekly chart for the must-clean-otherwise-the-house-is-just-too-plain-groady- jobs. I write the day in that I do the task (usually one thing a day) so I can see exactly when I changed the sheets or mopped the floor last. This actually makes it way easier. If I properly clean the bathroom every week it doesn't get so bad that I no longer have to scrub. I dunno. It sounds obvious but it took a while for me to figure out and implement it.

On the food side of life, we've been doing meal planning for a while now and I'm getting much better at planning meals around seasonal produce and remembering to plan things like booze and desserts into the budget. we've got our weekly grocery spending down to about $140 a week. That includes all lunches, nice coffee, alcohol at the weekends and entertaining friends so I think it's not bad. And I think I can get it down further, especially when we start a vegetable garden next spring.

So here's the unexpected part. I feel so much calmer as a result of starting to get better organized. Now that these changes are starting to become habits I feel less frustrated. I can focus better on my work. On my day off I used to intend to sit down and start drawing or do yoga but then I'd notice how dusty the floor under the sofa was and start cleaning instead. I have a time and place for that stuff now.

I dunno. I wasn't expecting to reap a sort of mental well-being from all these chirpy-toned housewives almanacs. But I have. So there!

She held pretty still while I did it. I think I want the bangs thicker, but it's a start!

This was the other morning, they'd both just gotten up, I love it!

New cushions covers! [Jun. 14th, 2011|01:49 pm]
This was a super-cheap way to update our lounge. The fabric was on sale at $5.99 a yard. I love Hancocks!

places [May. 26th, 2011|11:50 am]
As we have a wooden map puzzle, and a grandma in England, we've been teaching Veronica place names. She can say America, Africa, Europe all well enough. Her 'England' is just about understandable. But when you ask her to say 'UK' she says "Me K". Every time. Kills me!
